- DFU mode (Device Firmware Update).
DFU means Device Firmware Update. If a restore using Recovery Mode doesn’t work you will want to use DFU Mode as a last resort. When placing your iPhone into DFU Mode it does not load the OS before attempting the restore

NOTE***: It may take a few attempts to get your iPhone into DFU mode. If you are still holding both buttons down and you see the Apple logo you are holding them down for too long!
- Jailbreak
iOS jailbreaking, or simply jailbreaking, is the process of removing the limitations imposed by Apple on devices running the iOS operating system through use of custom kernels. Such devices include the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and 2nd Gen Apple TV. Jailbreaking allows users to gain root access to the operating system, allowing iOS users to download additional applications, extensions, and themes that are unavailable through the official Apple App Store. A jailbroken iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad running iOS can still use the App Store, iTunes, and other normal functions, such as making telephone calls. Unlike rooting an Android device, jailbreaking is necessary if the user intends to run software not authorized by Apple.Under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, jailbreaking Apple devices is legal in the United States, although Apple has announced that the practice “can void the warranty”
- Repo (Repository)
Software repository is a storage location from which a software package may be retrieved and installed on a computer. In this case a iDevice. They are called sources in Cydia.
- Semi-tethered
While the semi-tethered jailbreak will allow one to reboot on the road, it will have limited functionality. It is enough that you are no longer stranded, and you can use your phone, text, and many other features. This is just until you get home and can use the jailbreak program again to ‘just boot tethered.’ Once you do that, you’re back to fully functional state.

- Tethered jailbreak
A tethered jailbreak requires that the device be connected to a computer each time it needs to be booted.
- Untethered jailbreak
An untethered jailbreak allows the device to be powered without computer assistance. Under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, jailbreaking Apple devices is legal in the United States, although Apple has announced that the practice “can void the warranty”
